What a Florida Water Well Contractor’s License Means

A Florida Water Well Contractor’s License is a mandatory credential required to drill, repair, modify, or abandon water wells anywhere in the state. The license is administered through Florida’s Water Management Districts under oversight from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

Holding this license confirms that contractors are properly qualified to manage and perform well-related work while protecting groundwater resources and complying with environmental regulations.

High Standards and Proven Experience

Earning a Water Well Contractor’s License is not a simple process. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a minimum of two years of relevant hands-on experience, and pass a comprehensive examination with a score of 70 percent or higher. The exam covers technical knowledge, safety practices, and regulatory compliance.

Once issued, the license is valid across all five water management districts in Florida. Licensed contractors are authorized to install, repair, and modify wells, pumps, and tanks in accordance with state and local requirements.

Ongoing Education and Compliance

Licensed Water Well Contractors must renew their credentials every two years and complete at least 12 hours of approved continuing education. This ensures that contractors stay current with evolving regulations, technology, and best practices related to groundwater protection.

Florida law also requires license numbers to be clearly displayed on drilling rigs and business vehicles. Operating without a valid license is illegal, and all well work must comply with environmental safeguards designed to prevent groundwater contamination.
